As part of our Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) program, ten students have come together to begin a new service learning initiative. The group works directly with the Maitland Cottage Hospital (MCH) in Cape Town, South Africa. The hospital lends its service for free and focuses on children (mostly orphans) that are in need of orthopedic care.
Our students want to raise as much money as possible for the MCH. Next summer they plan on volunteering on-site, and will hand over the money they have collected for the children of the hospital. Last week, the St. John’s students had a Skype call with the authorities at the hospital in Cape Town, and got an overview of and look at the hospital and their current needs.
The group has managed to raise a considerable amount of money, despite being a new group that is still creating awareness of their project. The group’s activities include the Pancake Bake Sale, Smoothie Sale, Chocolate Sale, and selling postcards handmade by the children of the MCH hospital. Well done to all!
