Student obtains perfect IB score, enters Cambridge University

MartinA very talented St. John’s student who not only excelled in academics but also in the arts, Patricia Martin, has achieved something that few International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma candidates manage to do: she obtained a perfect score of 45 points!

We spoke to Patricia about the IB score, her time at St. John’s and plans for the future.

Did you expect to get a 45 on your IB?
“I did not expect it at all. I actually didn’t have a very good feeling about some of my exams, so it came as a huge surprise.”

Where have you decided to study and why?
“My university choice was a tough one to make as I had offers from my top choices, MIT and Cambridge, but I have finally decided to attend Cambridge and study Chemical Engineering.

In the end Cambridge was closer to home, allowed me to receive a Masters Degree and a Bachelors in four years (instead of six at MIT), and was simply prettier to me.”

What made your time at St. John’s special?
“First of all, I’d like to point out the genuine interest that teachers seem to have in the students and their academic success. The teachers know the students personally, adapt to their level of understanding, and are very often available outside of class to devote extra time to questions about the subject matter, or beyond it.

Second of all the general positive attitude and openness of the St. John’s community. From my first day at school I never really felt uncomfortable or shut out, there was always someone to talk to, someone to help or be helped by, and someone to laugh with.

And finally, the wealth of opportunities present. There are so many things to do at St. John’s. Not only can one take very demanding academic classes in different subject areas, but there are a multitude of extra-curricular activities to get involved with. From academic clubs and societies, to musical groups and athletic teams, passing through a wealth of service projects.”

What advice do you have for High School students?
“Make use of all the amazing opportunities St. John’s has to offer. It is a real privilege to have such amazing facilities, staff members and possible connections all brought together in a welcoming environment.”

Congratulations to Particia on her IB achievement and best of luck for an exciting future!
