Each year, the St. John’s community comes together to remember Tom O’Donnell, a former student who passed away to cancer in 1998, by organizing an indoor soccer tournament in his honor. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 15. It brings students, parents, teachers and alumni together for a day of indoor soccer, to remember Tom, while raising money for two cancer charities.
The first Tom O’Donnell indoor football tournament took place at St. John’s in 1998. While Tom was ill, it was brought to the attention of his family and friends that there were no hospital wards adapted to teenagers – the wards were either for adults or children. After his death, the Tom O’Donnell football tournament began to raise money in his memory for the ‘Teenage Cancer Trust’ in the U.K. (www.teencancer.org) and the Belgian charity ‘Jour Après Jour’ which aims to save and improve the lives of children with cancer.
How to sign up for the tournament: teams of students from grades 5 through 8 sign up with Mr. Woods, High School students, parents and alumni register with Tanya Gingell in the High School (firstname.lastname@example.org). We hope to see you on March 15!
