Fall is here. The days are shorter, the air is colder, the grass is muddier. This sports season is nearing its end, and ISST Championships are approaching. Our teams have worked hard up to this point, and results show it. The St. John’s varsity girls and boys soccer and volleyball teams have played a combined 41 games – and have only lost 8. Our cross country team has placed several runners in top ten finishes.
Hard works pays off, and talent is a crucial ingredient to success. Our highly qualified and committed coaching staff takes care of the rest. We are proud to have people lead our teams who have all played or coached at the highest level. Our girls soccer program is run by two ex-college players from the U.S., with one of the two having played soccer at the highest European club level. Our boys are coached by two former professional soccer players, with playing experience in Belgium, England, Spain, Turkey and Norway. On the volleyball court, our programs are headed by a two-time defending Belgian beach volleyball champion, as well as two other coaches who have played and coached at the highest level in Belgium. Our cross country team is coached by two experienced runners with one of them having competed successfully at the highest collegiate level in the US.
The ISST Championships will take place from November 8-10. This week will be highlighted by the girls volleyball championship which is hosted by St. John’s. The boys volleyball team will travel to Paris where they hope to improve on a 4th place finish last year and return home with a medal. The girls soccer team will head to Cobham, England, with the goal of living up to last year’s outstanding 2nd place finish. The boys will make a trip to Milan, where they will battle local foes BSB and ISB in the preliminary round. Our cross country runners will compete in the championship race in Zurich, hoping to finish towards the front of the pack.
“Not everyone can be a winner all the time but everyone can make that effort, that commitment to excellence.” – Vince Lombardi
This quote was added to the Athletics Handbook this school year, and we are happy to say that our teams have certainly lived up to it this Fall Season.
