The St. John’s International School Advisory Board is delighted to announce the appointment of three new Board members: Mr. Geoffrey Furlonger, Dr. Gary Wilton, and Sr. Brenda Wallace. With the retirement from the Advisory Board of Mr. Christian Varin and Mr. Andrew Renshaw after many years of service, the Advisory Board was looking to fill the vacation positions with people that have specific expertise and background relevant to our school. The aim was to bring in one new Board member with extensive educational expertise and another with legal experience and background. In addition, the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ) have appointed Sr. Brenda Wallace to take the place of Sr. Carmel Henley who is stepping down.
Mr. Geoffrey Furlonger’s son Richard is an 8th grader at St. John’s. Mr. Furlonger holds a Bachelor’s degree from Oxford University and received his Master’s degree in law from Boalt Hall School of Law (Berkeley, California). He began his career in San Francisco working for a law firm specializing in aviation and insurance law. He then worked for Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy in New York (which is a top ten U.S. firm) and has subsequently gone on to develop a successful career based in Brussels, advising clients on insurance law, pensions law, regulations surrounding asset management, employment laws, and EU regulations and practices.
Reverend Canon Dr Gary Wilton has two sons, Alex (17) and Simeon (14), at St John’s. He is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the European Union and a Canon of the Pro-Cathedral of Holy Trinity. Dr. Wilton spent 10 years in theological education, first as Director of Studies at Church Army’s college in Sheffield and then at York (St. John’s University). In both roles, Dr. Wilton was involved in teaching staff appraisal, curriculum development and quality assurance.
He studied Economics & Politics at the University of Bath (BSc Hons); Theology at Oxford, Church; Religion & Society at Trinity College Bristol (MA) and Education at the University of Nottingham (Ed.D). He is married to Gillian who is also ordained.
Sr. Brenda Wallace FCJ is Head Teacher of the FCJ’s large Comprehensive School for girls (1,100 pupils between the ages of 11 and 18) in West London. The FCJ have a long history with this School since 1841. The cultural backgrounds of the pupils is extremely varied and this highlights the need for an outlook which embraces international and global awareness. The school has keen educational links in China and in Kenya.
Sr. Brenda holds a PhD in ‘The Spiritual Journey of Clemente Rebora 1885-1957’. Beyond the doors of her own school, she serves as a Local (London) Leader of Education for the National College of School Leaders; she is a member of the national committee of the Association of Maintained Girls’ Schools; and she is a Consultant Leader for the Schools Network (Specialist Schools and Academies Trust).
We also welcome Sr. Margarita Byron, who will be the new FCJ provincial to replace Sr. Mary Fitzpatrick. She will serve on the ASBL board, but not on the Advisory board for St. John’s.
We welcome these new Board members and thank them for dedicating their time and expertise to St. John’s!
